ABATE of GA Road Safety Audit of State Road 190
with Georgia Department of Transportation
August 10-11, 2011
Submitted by Sue Duggan

As most of you know motorcycles are allowed to use the "HOV" Lanes here
in Georgia without issues. However, the new "HOT" Lanes (most of the
current HOV Lanes are being converted to HOT Lanes) will require a "PeachPass"
to use the lane (this cost money, $20.00 min, plus the cost of the
transponder). At least the Georgia Legislation realized the motorcycles
will still need to be exempt from the "PeachPass" and still be able to
use either the "HOV" or "HOT" Lanes.
What
do you need to do? To use the new "HOT" Lanes will require that you
register your motorcycle with the "PeachPass" people and there is NO
CHARGE for this. All you will need is your motorcycle license tag and
drivers license numbers. You CANNOT NOT USE THE WEB to register but must
call the following number: (855) PCH-PASS (724-7277). If you do use the
WEB, then you will end up paying for the privilege to use the "HOT"
Lanes.

ABATE of Georgia met with the Georgia Department of Transportation today
igniting dialogue to bridge the gap and jump start communications
between government officials and the motorcycle community. ABATE State
Director Dan Forrest, Education Director Sue Duggan and Legislative
Director Linda Allen met with GDOT officials Keith Golden Director of
Operations, Kathy Zahul, State Traffic Engineer, Tony Collins Director
of Field Services and Norm Cressman, Strategic Safety Planner in a
historic meeting of the minds to address motorcycle safety concerns.
During the course of the meeting several topics were discussed and
information shared on several topics including use of the electronic
highways signs to display motorcycle safety awareness information,
legislation, road conditions and hazards.
Several states utilize electronic highway signs to promote motorcycle
awareness to drivers. ABATE leaders requested that the Georgia
Department of Transportation follow suit and display verbiage that
promotes motorcycle awareness. Keith Golden , Director of Operations
committed to research the practice and possibility of adding motorcycle
awareness verbiage to state electronic signs.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is opposed to HB 161 Red Light.
ABATE leaders provided the agency with information and addressed
concerns which include a discrepancy in the numbers of traffic signals
that are inoperative and committed to provide the agency with
information from the eleven states that currently have red light
legislation and to provide statistical information and information on
specific traffic signals in Georgia that fail to recognize motorcycles.
State Traffic Engineer Kathy Zahul agreed to review the information
provided.
Road conditions in Georgia are deplorable and pose hazards to the
motorcycle community. Several ideas and suggestions were presented
including marking hazards, reporting hazardous road conditions, cleaning
debris from the roadways and intersections and the use of signs to warn
motorcyclists of dangers. Officials agreed with ABATEs findings and
cited budget cuts, commercial vehicle traffic and lack of manpower to
correct the situation. Director of Field Services, Tony Collins took
extensive notes and affirmed a commitment to address road hazards as
quickly as possible. He suggested reporting the conditions to 511.
Overall the meeting was successful and productive. It is a start and a
new beginning toward building a working relationship with the Georgia
Department of Transportation and the motorcycle community.
What can you do?
1.Report all traffic signals that fail to detect a motorcycle
By the web at

OR
By email: hazard@abatega.org
we will forward that information to GDOT and help make a
strong fact filled case in support of HB 161
